SXSW 2020
Algorithms & Influence: Who has a voice?
Description:
The decision on who has social influence and a cultural voice online comes down to two things: The algorithms that curate our messages and our interaction with those algorithms. Our clicks, likes, and comments are processed by these immense, relatively mysterious processes that ultimately determine who gets to have influence in digital spaces. While there remain hopes about the Internet as a democratic place where everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, and gender can have a voice, is that the Internet we’re building or are cultural biases coded into our digital future?
Speaking on extensive research on users’ relationship to the internet and curative algorithms, researcher Eszter Hargittai will present insights into how these forces are shaping our digital future.
